• There is no substitute for human blood. It can only come from a volunteer blood donor.
• 38% of the U.S. population is eligible to donate, but less than 5% actually do.
• One in seven people entering the hospital needs blood.
• The average adult has 10 pints of blood in their body, roughly 1 pint is given during a donation.
• A single-car accident victim can require as many as 100 pints of blood.
• Blood has four main components: plasma, red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets.
